Mary’s (a.s.) Perpetual Obedience

All beings are inherently submissive to their Lord: “And they say, ‘God has taken a son.’ Immaculate is He! Rather to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. All are obedient to Him”.(172) However, certain individuals, beyond this general submission, also possess the quality of qunūt (“perpetual obedience”), meaning constant submission; like Abraham (a.s.): “Indeed Abraham was a nation obedient to God, a hanif, and he was not one of the polytheists”.(173) Mary (a.s.), based on “so follow the creed of Abraham, a hanif”,(174) and Yūsuf (a.s.), based on “I follow the creed of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”,(175) were followers of Abraham (a.s.). Therefore, God confirms Mary’s (a.s.) obedience: “and she was of the devoutly obedient”.(176)
