Rhetorical Questioning and Rebuke of Christians
In the heading of this section of verses it was mentioned that God on the Day of Resurrection questions the prophets about how their communities responded.(292) The verse under discussion states, in order to prove the validity of this question and answer: God will ask Jesus before everyone on the Day of Resurrection whether he told people to take him and his mother as their gods: “And when God will say, ‘O Jesus son of Mary! Was it you who said to the people,’‘Take me and my mother for gods besides God’’?” Or did they do this themselves, since this is irrational speech contrary to the dictates of reason, so on whose command did they take Jesus and Mary as their object of worship? This reproachful question is in reality a rebuke of the community of Christ and a declaration of their condemnation, and it is a rhetorical question (istifhām inkārī); that is, you did not say such a thing to them, so how and for what reason did they take you and your mother as their god?
