Selected Exegesis

After Jesus (a.s.) expressed divine grace regarding the wicked and polytheists, God in this verse speaks about the reward of the truthful (ṣādiqīn): The Day of Resurrection is a day when the truthfulness (ṣidq) of the truthful will benefit them. Truth and falsehood (kadhib) are not exclusive to speech, but also encompass human belief, ethics, and behavior.

The divine benefit and reward for the truthful is of two types:

  1. Physical and sensual pleasures, such as benefiting from gardens of Paradise.

  2. The station of divine pleasure (riḍwān). They have attained the station of divine pleasure because not only their ethics and behavior, but their essential nature (jawhar dhātī) is pleasing to God (marḍī).

“Great success” (fawz ʿaẓīm) has degrees that differ from one another. The combination of the station of Paradise and the station of divine pleasure (riḍwān) is “great success” in absolute terms.
