The Indication of “Son” and “Mother” to the Negation of the Divinity of Christ and Mary

God did not say “I asked Jesus…,” but rather referred to Jesus as “son of Mary” and to Mary as “mother”: “O Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as gods besides God?” This expression, by way of relating the ruling to the attribute (taʿlīq al-ḥukm ʿalā l-waṣf), indicates the negation of the divinity of these two; that is, the ruling concerning these two persons who are mentioned with the two attributes of sonship and motherhood is the negation of divinity, and these two persons with these attributes (Jesus being born and Mary being a mother) cannot be gods, because God is one who “He neither begat, nor was begotten.”(297)
