Selected Exegesis

The Disciples (ḥawāriyyūn), after renewing their covenant and strengthening their faith, requested from Jesus the descent of a table (māʾida), and God bestowed favor upon them in the subsequent verses and, by answering the prayer of that sacred persona, sent down a heavenly table to them.

The question of the Disciples (ḥawāriyyūn): “Can your Lord…” - who were students of knowledge and gnosis (maʿrifa) of Jesus - could mean the requirement of divine expediency and wisdom; not that they had doubt in God’s power.
