Miracle Through Prayer

Prayer and supplication in the form of miracles appear in the Qur’an both for seeking benefit and harm. For benefit, such as “Jesus son of Mary said: ’O God! Our Lord! Send down to us a table from the sky, to be a festival for us, for the first ones and the last ones among us and as a sign from You, and provide for us; for You are the best of providers.’”(728) And prayer for harm, like “And when they said: ’O God, if this be the truth from You, rain down upon us stones from the sky, or bring us a painful punishment.’”(729)

In the story of mubāhala too, a miracle was sought from God through “prayer” that was to benefit the group of truth and harm the group of falsehood; that is, coming to the scene of mubāhala with the dearest family members and requesting punishment from God for the liars. Special note: The first person plural (let us call, let us pray earnestly, and let us invoke) is because the Prophet (s.a.w.) says to the Christians of Najrān during the argument that from this side, I with my sons, women, and loved ones who are like my soul, and you from that side with your sons, women, and loved ones who are like your souls, will rise for mubāhala, thus on each side there is the requirement for first person plural.
