Harmony of the Verses

After Mary (a.s.) received the good news of being chosen and purified, and after receiving God’s special favor, as well as His command regarding the necessity of devotion, prostration, and bowing, she chose a secluded spot (in the eastern part of the temple) among the worshippers in the temple. There, behind a veil, she engaged in worship to show gratitude for being chosen, purified, and specially favored, and to comply with God’s command.

The verses under discussion explain the relative selection of Mary (a.s.) that was mentioned in the previous verses: “When the angels said, ‘O Mary… and chosen you above the women of all peoples’”.(285) Therefore, the phrase “When she said” at the beginning of this verse corresponds with “When the angels said” at the beginning of Mary’s (a.s.) story. Some have said that it is an inclusive substitution.(286)
