Miracles to Prove Messengership
After explaining the pillars of Christ’s messengership (being eminent in this world and the hereafter, being near [to God], being righteous, etc.), it presents his fundamental messengership: “and [he will be] a messenger to the Children of Israel.”
Messengership, prophethood, and divine mission, in addition to the aforementioned pillars that Christ (a.s.) possessed, must be accompanied by miracles. If in this verse the miracle is mentioned first after establishing messengership, this does not mean that the miracle is the first pillar of messengership and the divine mission of a messenger. Rather, the miracle is for proving messengership.
The first pillar of messengership is the status and position of the messenger, as well as his call, which was explained in the previous verses. In this verse, which speaks about proving his messengership, it also mentions his miracle, which is effective in proving it: “I have certainly brought you a sign from your Lord.” Then it mentions his message thus: “Indeed God is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him. This is a straight path.”(387) Therefore, his claim is being a messenger of God, and the miracle is proof of this claim, and his message is a call to worship the Lord.
Note: “I have brought you” means he came from the divine realm, because when he brings God’s sign with him, it becomes clear that he came from there; as in “When Jesus brought the manifest proofs, he said, ’I have certainly brought you wisdom’”(388)
