Selected Exegesis

The context of address in this verse is the scene of the Day of Resurrection. God says to Jesus (a.s.): “Remember My blessing upon you and upon your mother...”

The sentences following the phrase “when I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit” (idh ayyadtuka bi-rūḥ al-qudus) serve as explanation and commentary (sharḥ wa tafsīr) and express the instances of divine support regarding Jesus (a.s.):

  1. His speaking in childhood and adulthood equally; in terms of truthful and authentic preaching and invitation.

  2. Learning the Book (kitāb), wisdom (ḥikma), the Torah (tawrāt) and the Gospel (injīl) through God’s teaching.

  3. Making the form of a bird from clay and breathing into it and its coming to life by divine permission (idhn).

  4. Healing the man who was blind from birth and the leper by God’s permission.

  5. Bringing the dead back to life by divine permission.

  6. Protecting Jesus (a.s.) from the conspiracy and harm of the Jews who did not believe in him.

The unbelievers (kuffār), since they did not possess sufficient understanding or awareness, considered the manifest miracles of Jesus (a.s.) to be nothing more than sorcery and magic. This negligent delusion (tawahhum tafrīṭī), like the excessive delusion (tawahhum ifrāṭī) of attributing divinity (ulūhiyyat) and being the Son of God to him, is false, because all those blessings and miracles were from divine supports (taʾyīdāt ilāhī) and only occurred by God’s permission.
