Witness in the Meaning of Observer
The expression “witness to all things” (ʿalā kulli shayʾin shahīd) sometimes means observed above and over everything, and sometimes means encompassing everything and aware of it.
In the verse “Is it not sufficient that your Lord is witness to all things?” (awa lam yakfi bi-rabbika annahu ʿalā kulli shayʾin shahīd) (336) witness (shahīd) means observed (mashhūd), because how can a God who is observed everywhere not be sufficient for proof and require another proof for His existence.
However, in the verse under discussion, “witness” (shahīd) means observer, not observed (mashhūd), otherwise it would be incompatible with that reasoning and proof of Jesus (a.s.): He says that You know all things; meaning You know what they did and what I said, because You are witness to all things. If in the verse under discussion, witness (shahīd) means observed (mashhūd), it is not consistent with this reasoning.
