Abraham’s (a.s.) Prayer Regarding Mecca
The prayer of Abraham (a.s.) concerning Mecca and its inhabitants is one of the blessings that God, the Glorified, wishes to be remembered. In this prayer, security is placed alongside material and economic benefits as one of the most significant divine blessings, as mentioned in another verse: “Who has fed them against hunger and made them secure from fear.” Abraham’s first prayer in this verse includes two sequential requests: first, that the uninhabited land become a city, and second, that the city be granted security. Accordingly, after the initial part of that prayer was fulfilled and the land transformed into a city through the gathering and settlement of a group of people, he continued his supplication, saying: “My Lord, make this city secure” [106:4]. Abraham’s (a.s.) intention in this prayer may have been either that God would establish a secure city so that his descendants would not have to live in the wilderness or that a secure city be established within the sanctuary of the Kaʿba, which he had founded.
