Coherence of Verses
The verse under discussion can be an extensive explanation of the religion of Abraham, which is referred to as “upright” (ḥanīf), or its bringer is referred to as such. Since the upright religion of Abraham is pure Islam, which is the only acceptable religion to God and nothing else is accepted by Him, it can also be attributed to other prophets.
Based on this, and considering that in the previous verse, in response to the invitation of Jews and Christians to Judaism and Christianity, there was a brief mention of following the religion of Abraham and the upright faith, this verse elaborates on that summary and explains how this following is manifested in belief, speech, and action. It also serves as guidance for Jews and Christians to the true path they should follow. It’s as if it says: The religion and faith of Abraham consists of testifying to the oneness of God and the truth of what was revealed to the prophets_—without making any distinction between them—_and submission to the Lord. In other words, this verse addresses the believers, saying: Do not be like the Jews who do not accept Jesus, Muhammad, and the two books of the Gospel and the Qur’an, nor like the Christians who reject Muhammad and his book, the Qur’an.
